- Distinguished Kiwanian Awards were earned by: President John Cove and President-designate Phil Field
- Charter Night held May 29, 1997 at the Petroleum Club was a great success. Paul Willhide (94 years young) told us some of the history of our charter. Our original certificate of charter has survived many obstacles through the years including fire at the Bakersfield Inn. Our charter was returned to Paul Willhide by a woman who found the charter after the fire. She noticed a framed certificate while firefighters were cleaning the scene, lucky for us it caught her eye. We had the original framed certificate on hand for President John Cove to pass on to President-designate Phil Field. President-designate Field was also presented with a briefcase to carry the business papers of the club when he is installed as President. Our two charter members joined in the celebration, Dr. Stephen Montgomery and John Boydstun. It was a pleasure having both charter members on hand for this special night. It was our pleasure to welcome two new members on this night. Milo Hall inducted Andrew Kupka and Art Lawson. Welcome to the Kern Kiwanis Club. Bonnie Hart and the Highland High Jazz Choir once again entertained us with their wonderful program. It is always such a pleasure to have these young people join us.
- Tammy Lodermeier updated us on the Hixson Award. Six Kern members have pledge or donated $1,000 or more to the IDD World Wide Service Project. They are: Pres. John Cove, Pres.-designate Phil Field, PP Ken Gibb, Marc Mullins, David Rogers and PSDLG John Stephenson. - Kern President-designate Phil Field
