- CONGRATULATION! CONGRATULATION! Our Vice President Tammy Lodermeier presented us a fantastic & Great 50th Anniversary as Kern Kiwanis celebrated "A TRIBUTE TO THE PAST". We began in announcing the City of Bakersfield Proclamation from Mayor Robert Price that May 27, 1998 be declared Kern Kiwanis Day in our community. Letters of congratulation were read from Cal-Nev-Ha District Governor Reid Allen and International President Walter Sellers. PP Walt Heisey led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and recited one of his lovely poems. Spiritual Aims Chairman Michael Friedman gave a moving invocation most fitting to our opening ceremony. A special moment when President Phil Field presented Life Member Status to the following: Charter Members Dr. Steve Montgomery and John Boydstun, Secretary Emeritus (22 years) & Honorary President Paul Willhide and PSDLG John Stephenson. PSDLG John Stephenson (Kern Club) and PP John Wagner (Community) presented "A Moment in Time" history by decades. The Charter was passed by each Past President until President Phil Field presented Pres. Elect Charles Neville it to keep. Also, PE Charles Neville was given a briefcase to keep his president papers. Many special guests joined us: Cal-Nev-Ha District Governor Reid Allen (Pasadena), Div. Lt. Governor Rudy Arambula (So. Bakersfield), 1984-85 Lt. Gov. Hal & Dorothy Harney (East Bakersfield & Golden K), 1992-93 Lt. Gov. Phil & Ruth Niederauer (Westchester), President Sheila Hayden (Bakersfield), PP Karla Jadwin (So, Bakersfield) & her fine photography, President Sunny Scofield (Golden K), 1998-99 Key Club President Hilary Ashland (East High). We were very happy to have the following widows: Elaine Hastin (1959 Pres. & 1967 LG Ken), Mildred Wilson (1972-73 Pres. Erv) and Helen Heckman (1973-74 Pres. Bob). The seventeen Past Presidents are pictured and listed in the Calendar page. A standing ovation was given PSDLG John Stephenson as he received the highest honor of the Kiwanis International Foundation - THE TABLET OF HONOR. Everyone had a remembrance to leave with in the form of a Kern Kiwanis Club Cup carrying a special cookie depicting our 50 years (1948-98). Also, winners from each table took home a unique centerpiece made up of cookies in the shapes of Kiwanis Symbols. Truly a night to remember; THANK YOU TAMMY for a most perfect Charter Night celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Kern Kiwanis - Balloons - Pictures and all.
