- Kern Kiwanis Club's Fireworks Stand at Rosedale Hwy. & Calloway. Chair Fuchsia Ward thanked the 41 workers (38 Kern Club members) for their outstanding efforts in totaling 410 hours. The "BIG ONE" salesmen were: Ed Bostick, Rick Douglass, George Kates and Chair Fuchsia Ward (2). The net sales for the July 2000 Fireworks were $15,286 or down $844 from last year. - Cal-Nev-Ha District Convention, San Diego, CA. The induction ceremony for 2000-01 Div. 33 Lt. Governor Phil and First Lady Leah Field was held on Saturday evening. - Team 2000 Installation was held at Parkway Inn. Michael Friedman began the evening the invocation, and Past Pres. Charles Neville introduced the head table. Wonderful entertainment was provided by a Father and his 3 son's quartet called "GENETIC BLEND". Past Pres. Charles Neville recognized and thanked each of his chairpersons with a Kiwanis Candy Jar gift. Secretary John Cove presented Legion of Honor and Perfect Attendance Awards. Milo Hall inducted Lupe Banda (Job Corps) with her sponsor "Teno" Navarro. Div. 33 Lt. Gov. Marvin Fuller (Oildale) retired the 1998-99 Kern Officers and Directors. Team 2000 was installed by Div. 33 Lt. Gov. Ray Hacker (Rosedale) as follows: Pres. Wally Picthford, Pres. Elect Rudy Barrera, Vice Pres. Lee Mathers, Secretary/Treasurer John Cove and Immediate Past Pres. Charles Neville; and Directors: Milo Hall, Lynn Hathaway, Al Lum, Mike McCarthy, Warren Morse, Bob Ross, Gordon Stringer, Fuchsia Ward and Chuck Williams. President Pitchford presented IPP Neville with his gavel appreciation plaque commemorating his year. Also, he gave Past First Lady Ann Neville a gift. Congratulation to IPP Charles Neville for his memorable year and devotion to this club.

- Chair Human & Spiritual Values Mike Friedman reported that the Salvation Army Bell Ringing Mervyn's California Ave. Store was a success with $1,161.11 collected: South Door collected $687.11 ($269.11 & $418.00) with following working: Ed Wilson, Steve Snitchler, Mary Jo Kasselman, Lynn Hathaway, Lupe Banda, John Stephenson (Both),Rudy Barrera, Warren Morse, John Wagner, Chuck Heppe, Wendall Kinney & Paul Bristol; and East Door collected $474.00 ($250.00 & $224.00) with the following working: George Kates, Chuck Williams, Wally Pitchford, Gordon Stringer, Nile Kinney, Lee Mathers, Willis Lezalle (Both), Charles Neville (Both), Fuchsia Ward, Mike McCarthy, Jeff Pate (2 Shifts).

- George and Catherine Kates held another wonderful Christmas Party at their home for members of the Kern Club and guests. Thanks to David Rogers, Jeffrey Glover and Bob Ross who barbecued the chicken and tri-tip which was so good. (Left) Also, thanks to Fuchsia Ward, Phil Field, Walt Harper and the members of BCHS Key Club.

- The Kern Kiwanis Club's Millennium Fire Works Stand (or FWS2) operated at Rosedale Hwy. & Calloway under the able Chair of Fuchsia Ward (our terrific gal). A total of 39 worked a total of 291 hours. - Division 33 TOTAL K Day was held at Jamison Park, 1010 Shalimar Dr. from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The following Kern members cleaned the Park: Pres. Wally Pitchford, PE Rudy Barrera, VP Lee Mathers, PSDLG John Stephenson, LGE Phil Field, PP John Wagner, Teno Navarro & Juanita George. In addition, Kern's Sponsored Youth helped clean up the playground with: 6 from Kiwin's EBH and 2 from Key Club BCH.

- Official Governor Visit by Terri Neumann to Div. 33 was held at Sheraton Four Points Hotel, 5101 California Ave. The Social started at 6 p.m. with Dinner at 7 p.m. Entertainment was The In-Laws, PLG Wendall Kinney and Elizabeth Kinney. From Division 33, a total of 128 were in attendance with Kern Club having 14. LGE Phil Field was the Master of Ceremonies and PSDLG John Stephenson was the official photographer. Lynn Hathaway was Kern's DSA, but she had to leave early due to Chad illness. East Bakersfield High Kiwin's Governor Elizabeth Pluta was honored at the head table with PDLG Phil Niederauer and Cal-Nev-Ha Governor Terri Neumann.

- Division 33 held its election at 5:30, Hodel's with 8 of the 13 clubs represented. PSDLG John Stephenson conducted the election since PLG Marvin Fuller was out of town. Phil Field (Kern) was elected 2000-01 Lt. Governor. Robert McDaniel (Shafter) was elected 2000-01 Lt. Governor Elect.

- Kern presents 2001 Junior Miss Program Celebrating 28 years of excellence at Harvey Auditorium, 7:00 p.m. Jr. Miss Chair was PLG Willis Lezalle. Megi Campbell (East Bakersfield High) captured Bakersfield's Junior Miss title plus the Presence & Composure and Spirit of Jr. Miss, and a $2,800 scholarships in the annual competition. Megi performed a vocal. First runner-up Lisa Green (Bakersfield High) won $1,200 scholarship, Second runner-up Jennifer Kaminski (Bakersfield High) won $1,000 scholarship and Third runner-up Cameron Dietiker (Highland High) won $800 scholarship. Fourteen high school junior girls competed for a total of $18,800 scholarships. Thirteen Kern members and 5 guests worked the event.

- Cal-Nev-Ha District Kiwin's Convention, Ontario, CA, Marriott. East Bakersfield High Kiwin's Club had 15 members attending the convention including the 1999-2000 Kiwin's District Governor Elizabeth Pluta. In addition, Faculty Advisor Michelle Sanders and Kiwanis Advisor (Backup) PSDLG John Stephenson drove the two school vans to the convention. Pres. Isai German accepted 1st place in the Silver club group for the highest percent attending the convention. Paul Philley won 1st place in the Oratory Contest. The 25th Kiwin's Convention with 670 attendees was the largest in its history. Kiwin's Gov. Elizabeth Pluta did an outstanding job in presiding over the convention.

- Kern Kiwanis Club's Distinguished Service Award (DSA) was presented to Children's Welfare Chair Lynn Hathaway by President Wally Picthford. Congratulations Lynn.

- Global IDD DAY. The Kiwanis Family SKIP A MEAL on April 30 - May 6, 2000 in celebration for the World Children. This year over 14 million children will be born free of mental retardation caused by IDD. To date, Kiwanis has affected the lives of 600 million people or 40 percent of the people at risk.Twenty-one members donated $157.

- Paul Willhide celebrated his 98th birthday on May 19, 2000. Kern Kiwanis Club President Wally Pitchfork presented Paul with a card signed by the club members. Paul was Club Secretary for 22 years retiring in 1987. The Board named him Honorary President since he trained so many. Paul was honored with the 10th Hixson. Currently, the club has 21 Hixsons on their "Club Honors" banner.

- The 52nd Kern Kiwanis Club's Annual Charter Night was held at Benji's French Basque Restaurant. President Wally Pitchford presented President-designate Rudy Barrera with a briefcase and the Charter. Forty-two were in attendance including two Charter members: Dr. Steve Montgomery and John Boydstun, Sr.

- At King Leo's, the East Bakersfield Kiwin's held their installation and pizza party. 2000-01 Officers are: President - Isai German; Co-Vice Presidents - Felica Muriel & Kristen Martin; Secretary - Robert Harkins; Sargent at Arms - Jason Martinez and Historian - Michael Martinez. 2000-01 Ruby Division Lt. Gov. Andrea Garcia was installed at the Ontario Kiwin's District Convention.

- Kern Kiwanis Club's 6th Million Dollar Hole-In-One Shootout at Stroke Cutters. PSDLG John Stephenson and Tammy Lodermeier (South Bakersfield) are Co-Chairs, and they presented the first place check of $1,000 to David Ferris who was 6.73 feet from the pin. Second was Patrick Cook with $500 (14.71 feet) and third Adam Breceda with $250 (30.17 feet). A total of 167 out of 345 golfers qualified by getting their ball in a 12 foot circle which gave them 3 balls for the semi-finals. The 10 closest to the pin had one shot for the Million Dollars. Six hole-in-ones were made during qualifying rounds. The ball sales totaled $11,760 or $4,351 less than last year. On Thursday afternoon, we were shut down for 6 hours because of a 6 vehicle crash north of Stroke Cutter on Highway 65 and the ensuing rain. In addition, the finals for Lakers (Friday) and Stanley Cup (Saturday) hurt evening ball sales. Co-Chairs John and Tammy would like to thanks all our sponsors and workers for an outstanding run event.

- Kiwanis International Convention, Miami, Florida. Cal-Nev-Ha District had 698 (8%) registered for the convention. Div. 33 had 33 attending or 4.7% of the District, and 100% of the clubs. Kern Kiwanis Club had 9 attending or 27.2% of the Division. Kern Pres. designate Rudy Barrera is in the Cal-Nev-Ha District delegates section with Div. 33 Lt. Gov. Ray Hacker, South Bakersfield Pres. designate Tammy Lodermeier and PDLG Phil Niederauer.
