John was born in Sebring, Florida on March 11, 1947. He was raised by his mother in Avon Park, Florida along with his brother Jim. After finishing high school where among his deeds included fours years in Key Club (President during his senior year), John attended the University of South Florida where he received a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education. He took a teaching poition in Bakersfield and drove into town in August 1979 (and it was hot!).
John was assigned to teach kindergarten (welcome to the neighborhood) at Nichols School where he met the lovely longhaired MaryAnn who was destined to become his wife. In the years that followed John taught kindergarten, first, third fifth grades, and junior high school. His daughter Erica was born in 1976 about the time he received a Master's degree in Educational Administration from California State College Bakersfield. While working on a Doctorate degree at the University of Southern California, Proposition 13 led John to the stock and bond business. Son Devin was welcomed in that year of 1980. Since that time John has served as assistant manager and manager at a leading brokerage firm and is employed by Merrill Lynch as a Certified Financial Planner and Assistant Vice President.
John joined Westchester Kiwanis in 1976 and served as Club President in 1992-93. He and his family are members of First Presbyterian Church. John has served his community by serving nine years as a school trustee for Bakersfield City Schools and is currently a trustee on the Kern Community College District Board. Over the years he has served the American Lung Association, Kern County Museum Foundation, Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, Cal State Bakersfield Alumni Board, Phi Delta Kappa, Republican Central Committee, and Bakersfield Art Foundation. He is a proud thirteen gallon member of the Houchin Blood Bank.
Kiwanis Division 33, a part of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Kiwanis International, has a membership near five hundred men and women serving their communities in Central and Western Kern County, California.
