DIVISION 33 LT. GOV. BULLETIN

December 1996 & January 1997
Editor Rudy Arambula (324-3143 / 871-8073)

From the Lt. Governor

Here we are in a New Year - 1997. We are one-third into our Kiwanis Year - The Year of the Club. It has been a wonderful time for Mary Ann and I. We survived (all the food) of twelve Club Installations that were all unique and all fantastic.

I am making Official Club and Board visits and getting to meet a wonderful group of Kiwanis men and women. Our division is blessed with a multitude of talented individuals.

I hope all Kiwanians are thinking about and working toward being a Distinguished Kiwanian. Every club should be aiming at becoming Distinguished.

Please read carefully and help us with the IDD -Worldwide Service Project. Sign up for the North Mid-Winter Conference at Modesto (choo, choo). Bring a friend to a service project. Get involved.

My continuing thanks to the PLG's for their help, to the Club Presidents for their leadership, and to you individual Kiwanians for the service you provide the communities we serve.

P.S. If you missed the Governor's Visit, you missed a wonderful talk by Governor Nelson and the many well deserved Distinguished Service Awards for fellow Division 33 Kiwanians.

Kiwanis Division 33, a part of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Kiwanis International, has a membership near five hundred men and women serving their communities in Central and Western Kern County, California.

John Rodgers, Lt. Governor

4613 Christmas Tree Lane, Bakersfield, CA 93306-1769

PAST DISTRICT OFFICERS OF DIVISION 33 RECEPTION

The reception for Governor Nelson Tucker and First Lady Elva was held at the new home of 1992-93 South Bakersfield President Karen and Paul Sturgeon on January 10, 1997 from 4:00-6:00 pm. Immediate Past Lt. Governor Stan Redmond was responsible for the mailing and RSVP for the event.

WORLDWIDE SERVICE PROJECT - IDD

The Worldwide Service Project has a goal of ridding the world of IDD (Iodine Deficiency Disorder). Kiwanis International evaluated a number of global needs before choosing this one. The battle against Iodine Deficiency Disorder was chosen for four main reason: IDD's cause is known, the scientific capability to detect it is available, its victual elimination is achievable, and the success of the program can be monitored afterward. No other program can help so many, so fast, at so little cost. There are an estimated 1.5 billion people affected by the lack of iodine.

We humans require about one teaspoon of iodine over a lifetime. Iodine affects the function of the muscles, liver, heart, and kidneys and is necessary for proper brain development.

Division IDD Chair PLG Lynn Buttcane (Tehachapi) has a tape program to give your club upon request.

The Kiwanis International goal, as approved by your delegates in New Orleans, is to raise 75 million dollars world wide in donations and member pledges by the time the International Convention convenes in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in June 1998. Over 11.7 million dollars has been collected or pledged since the end of the Kiwanis International Convention last summer in Salt Lake City. By Nashville convention in June, 1997, we hope to have 45 million dollars collected or pledged.

The California-Nevada-Hawaii District is the largest district in Kiwanis International. We have 20,300 Kiwanians in our district. At its convention in Santa Clara in August, 1996, the delegates pledged that we would raise our share of the money. Our share is 5 million dollars. When we divide that out, we come up with $246 per member pledge.

Please consider the impact that your dollars can make. If you have turned your pledge card in to your Club IDD Chair, we say thank you. But if you have not, please get a pledge card now so your club can have 100% participation in this most noble cause.
