DIVISION 33 LT. GOV. BULLETIN

June 1997

Editor Rudy Arambula (324-3143 / 871-8073)

From the Lt. Governor

I have just finished this month's club report tallying. There are some great signs. Six clubs added new members totaling eleven and four clubs lost a member apiece. That gives our Division some more candidates for Distinguished Kiwanian Award. Presidents, let's get after those candidates to finish the requirements. This month we had a 100% club - Kern. Congratulations... Taft was close behind with 98%...Great job!

The International Convention is just around the corner. Those of you that are going have all your paperwork finished and a copy with you...Just in case. Pasadena is where we are going for the District Convention in August. Presidents and Secretaries have the information. It is close so let's have a great turnout from Division.

We are finally getting from Kiwanis International Foundation up to date numbers on our IDD giving. You Clubs are doing a super job. We are currently fifth in the District. Keep up the great effort. Thanks for all your work for Division 33.

TEHACHAPI'S GOLF TOURNAMENT RESULTS

The 2nd Annual Tehachapi Kiwanis Charity Golf Tournament was held on Thursday, May 22nd, with 72 golfers playing. Seven of the 18 foursomes represented Kiwanis clubs: Kern, Taft, South Bakersfield, and two each from Gardena and Tehachapi; great support from our K-family friends. The winning teams were: 1st - Rich Miller, Bruce Hodges, Steve Fuller & Mark Hall (Taft Kiwanis); 2nd - Bill Oliphant, Bud Olds (Past Governor), Bob Mills & Bob Prideaux; 3rd - Jim Elliott, Bob Hennessy, Mike Cramer & Mike Turnbull.

The revolving trophy plaque for the highest scoring Kiwanis team, naturally, will reside with the Kiwanis Club of Taft through the 3rd annual tournament. Don Hamilton, Tehachapi, won both the Putting Contest and the Closest-to-the-Pin Contest on the 7th hole.

Rex & Sarah Moen, Co-Chairs of the event, reported that they heard many compliments from both local and out-of-town players. Club member volunteers who made it all work numbered nineteen, and they enjoyed the day just as much as did the players. This was a very successful fund-raiser, netting over $5,000 for the club's Service Fund. - Tehachapi President Paul Combs

YEAR OF THE CLUB

KERN KIWANIS CELEBRATES 49TH CHARTER NIGHT

Charter Night held May 29, 1997 at the Petroleum Club was a great success. Paul Willhide (94 years young) told us some of the history of our charter. Our original certificate of charter has survived many obstacles through the years including fire at the Bakersfield Inn. Our charter was returned to Paul Willhide by a woman who found the charter after the fire. She noticed a framed certificate while firefighters were cleaning the scene, lucky for us it caught her eye. We had the original framed certificate on hand for President John Cove to pass on to President-designate Phil Field. President-designate Field was also presented with a briefcase to carry the business papers of the club when he is installed as President. Our two charter members joined in the celebration, Dr. Stephen Montgomery and John Boydstun. It was a pleasure having both charter members on hand for this special night. It was our pleasure to welcome two new members on this night. Milo Hall inducted Andrew Kupka and Art Lawson. Welcome to the Kern Kiwanis Club. Bonnie Hart and the Highland High Jazz Choir once again entertained us with their wonderful program. It is always such a pleasure to have these young people join us.

Tammy Lodermeier updated us on the Hixson Award. Six Kern members have pledge or donated $1,000 or more to the IDD World Wide Service Project. They are: Pres. John Cove, Pres.-designate Phil Field, PP Ken Gibb, Marc Mullins, David Rogers and PSDLG John Stephenson. - Kern President-designate Phil Field

ONE MILLION DOLLAR

HOLE-IN-ONE SHOOTOUT

On June 5th to 8th, the Kern Kiwanis Club held their 3rd annual Million Dollar Hole-In-One Shootout. This event raised $15,000 for local charities under the leadership of Co-Chairs Tammy Lodermeier and John Stephenson. During the four day event, a total of 497 golfers participated at Stroke Cutters Golf Practice Range with 142 golfers (702 shots) in the Semi-finals.

The ten finalist shot one ball for a $1,000,000 hole-in-one and prizes. The top winners were: 1st - E. Z. Sandstrom at 13.32' - $1,000; 2nd - Mark Ramirez at 21.72' - $500; and 3rd - John Hall at 22.10' - $250. All finalist received plaques.

Sixty-six Kern Kiwanis Club members worked nearly one thousand hours during this event. Also, the Kern Kiwanis Foundation provided the delicious food.

Thanks to our 1997 Presenting Sponsors: A.R.R.C. Technology and San Joaquin Community Hospital and the many Trade Sponsors. - PSDLG John Stephenson
