DIVISION 33 LT. GOV. BULLETIN

July 1997

Editor Rudy Arambula (324-3143 / 871-8073)

From the Lt. Governor

Keep those new DKA sheets coming in. We need to charge ahead. Recent new names to me are JoAnn Davis & Don O'Dell (South Bakersfield) and President Virginia Yasaitis (Golden K Rosewood-Kern City). We will soon have a complete listing of DKA's for Division 33 for all of you.

District Convention in Pasadena looks like fun. We have lots of Kiwanians signing up to attend. Get your reservation and delegate forms in ASAP.

The International Convention in Nashville was very interesting, educational, and eye-opening. Each club that attended should have someone reporting on the trip.

Please keep PLG Lynn Buttcane of Tehachapi Club in your prayers. He had a stroke on the left side and is recovering at home. Keep those IDD dollars coming in so we can make Lynn proud.

Also, PLG Jim Turner of Westchester Club is in USC Hospital recovering after major problems with his left leg. Keep Jim in your prayers.

CONVENTION SPEECH

Roger Moore, UNICEF special representative for the film arts and Worldwide Service Project honorary chairman spoke on Sunday, June 29, 1997. The following are a few of his remarks:

Today I am thrilled to report that the momentum has continued to build, In 1996, Kiwanis contributions continued to help save children all over the world from mental retardation. In just that one year, the lives of 10,000 young people were saved in South Africa; 320,000 in Mexico; 69,000 in Thailand; 184,000 in Vietnam; 24,000 in the Central African Republic; 47,000 in Yemen; and 508,000 in Brazil. The list goes on-- and happily it grows longer every day.

As you know, this is Kiwanis' first Worldwide Service Project, and there's something special about it that makes you want to give your all, because it is protecting children from an insidious enemy--one that unnecessarily incapacitates millions of children for life, all because of the lack of iodine in the diet.

Those children are precious beings, and we have promised to help and protect them. I know we will keep that promise.

And what a glorious day it will be when everyone in Kiwanis/UNICEF family can say that we met the challenge head on and accomplished what we set out to do...that we rid the world of IDD. And, best of all, that we did it for the children.

At the June 19th DCM hosted by Tehachapi, two George F. Hixson Fellowships were presented to District Counselor Divs. 33 & 38 John Stephenson and South Bakersfield President Filmore Bender. Others pictured are: Divs. 33 & 38 IDD Chair Lynn Buttcane, Kern IDD Chair Tammy Lodermeier, South Bakersfield IDD Chair JoAnn Davis, and Lt. Governor John Rodgers.

ROSEDALE CLUB HONORS JR. HIGH STUDENTS

For the second year in a row, the Kiwanis Club of Rosedale, Bakersfield have saluted local junior high/middle school kids in their annual Student Recognition Program.

A boy and girl from each of the seven middle schools in the Rosedale area of Bakersfield were recognized. Parents and other family members joined the honored students, along with a school representative, at the club's regular Tuesday morning meetings. The club heard a listing of each student's accomplishments afterwhich the students were presented with a plaque, a handshake from club president Dave Axtell and a round of applause from the membership.

Students were selected by school officials for their outstanding contributions to their school as well as their accomplishments and personalities.

The honored students and their schools are as follows:

Fruitvale -- Michael Carr & Brandi Shelby

Compton -- Kathryn Rappleye & Ryan Hemmingway

Curran -- Crystal McCown & Tyanthony Morrell

Beardsley -- Jesse Gonzales & Kristin Black

Norris -- Dustin Freer & Kara Schroepfer

Rio Bravo -- Darren Wright & Barbara Johnson

Rosedale Middle -- Ryan Murphy & Kathleen Matthews

After saluting all the students at one meeting in 1996, this year the club opted to salute one school each week for seven consecutive meetings during April and May.

Again this year the chairman of this excellent program was Dr. Hugh McGowan, former Principle of Curran Junior High School who has recently been promoted to the District Office. - President-designate Paul McAdam
