HISTORY OF THE KIWANIS CLUB OF GOLDEN K

ROSEWOOD-KERN CITY, BAKERSFIELD

 

The 1993-94 Lt. Governor John W. Stephenson (Kern) presented to the Division 33 Council meeting on October 21, 1993 the Rosewood & Kern City area as the site of the ninth club in Bakersfield. He named 1984-85 Lt. Governor Hal Harney (East Bakersfield) to be Chairman of the New Club Building Committee. The committee included Life Member Dale Brewer (Westchester) and Stan Peterson (East Bakersfield). Lt. Governor John also named 1992-93 Lt. Governor Phil Niederauer (Westchester) as Kiwanis International Accredited Representative (KIAR).

 

The Kiwanis Club of Golden K Rosewood-Kern City, Bakersfield was officially organized on July 27, 1994 after twenty-eight pre-organizational meetings held at the Rosewood Activity Room (1301 New Stine Rd.). KIAR Phil Niederauer conducted this meeting with 25 paid names on the official Kiwanis Petition.

 

The club's Charter Night Dinner was held on September 11, 1994 at the Rosewood Retirement Center Main Dining Room with 102 in attendance. Cal-Nev-Ha District Governor Frank Taylor (Castle-Atwater) presented the Charter to Tom Toler, the Charter President. In attendance were District First Lady Marie Taylor, Circle K Cal-Nev-Ha District Governor Paul Crews and wife Diana, and Guest Speaker Chuck Wall and wife Di. We list below the names of the 25 members who received Charter Certificates. As of September 30, 2007, the active charter members are indicated with an asterisk (*):

Division 33 clubs who sponsored the Kiwanis Club of Golden K Rosewood-Kern City, Bakersfield are as follows: Kern ($100 Sponsor Fee & 13 speakers); Bakersfield (Flag Set & 1 speaker); East Bakersfield (President Case, 1 speaker & 4 members); Oildale (Secretary/Treasurer Case, 1 speaker, & Organizing Acting Secretary); Rosedale (Gong/Gavel & 2 speakers); South Bakersfield (Honors Banner, photographer & 1 member); and Westchester (Club Banner, 2 speakers & 3 members).

 

The club holds it's weekly mid-morning meetings on Wednesday from 10:15-11:30 a.m. at the Rosewood Activity Room. The monthly board meetings are held on the first Wednesday from 11:45-12:15 p.m. after the regular meeting.

 

Sunny Scofield was installed as 2008-09 President with CM PP George Thomson as Immediate Past President.

 

As 2008-09 year starts, our Kiwanis Club of Golden K Rosewood-Kern City, Bakersfield has 9 members with 1 charter members, and our theme is "ONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE " to provide Community Service.
