PRESIDENT’S CORNER:

I am honored and humbled to take on the Kiwanis

leadership role as the President of the 70th year of Kiwanis here in Shafter.  The Installation Dinner September 20th marked the transition moment with the de-installation of Ben Wilson and his Officers and installation of the new Officers facilitated by our new Lt. Governor Mona Millington.

If you didn’t make it you really missed out on the fine dining and fellowship, not forgetting the beautiful acoustical music provided by Matt Sarad.  The music together with a fabulous dinner provided by Chef Anthony at Cesar’s Deli, this was a night to truly remember.  With the clanging of the Kiwanis

Bell, the meeting shifted into high gear with Daniel Knapp as the Master of Ceremonies.  I then said to myself: “They didn’t tell me that this was going to a Fryers Roast.”  We all busted out in laughter as it was all in good fun among friends and neighbors.  Before I knew it we were driving home recanting the evening events for a second round of laughter.

My first goal as your new President is to increase our Membership by 50%.  This in turn will stimulate new revenue and will provide more helping hands to ease the work on our committees while moving forward in our effort to serve the Children in Shafter.  My first act as President was to pin a new member to Kiwanis – James Keams, with two new members coming onboard next week – Robert Gonzalez and Manuel Garcia.  So we are off to a great start for this 70th year of Kiwanis.  I want to encourage you to think about someone who could be a potential member, and then to reach-out by in bringing them to a meeting as a guest of yours.  It really is very pleasing to hear: “I would be delighted to go and to consider becoming a member.”

Kiwanis is like a big family where support one another, share ideas, and where opinions are like pennies – everybody has a few.  When you help out with the preparation of a Xmas basket or see “Terrific Kids” appear proudly with their parents, then you’ll recognize the true spirit of giving.  Have a Happy Thanksgiving and thank you, one and all.

KIWANIS NEWS:

The Harvest Parade and Carnival was a success this year with many churches and volunteer organizations taking part.  The Shafter PD, Fire Dept. and City of Shafter personnel also contributed, making the event truly enjoyable and safe.  There were over 100 children entered in the parade which featured a color guard from the American Legion, the Richland and Shafter High bands, the Gladiators and the Junior Miss participants.  Woody Colvard chaired this event. His many hours put into planning provided great dividends once again.
